Digitizing is a process that we use for Reverse Engineering or TRACING actual objects into the computer.

Digitizing Capabilities
Ideas In 3D is a 3D Digitizing and Reverse Engineering service bureau for the manufacturing industry. We have 13 years of experience in Digitizing alone which has led us to develop our own proprietary R.E.A.D. machine ( Reverse Engineering And Digitizing ) that allows us to Design directly into the computer from actual objects and to accurately trace FreeForm edges.
Understanding Digitizing
No one looks at the edges when they think about digitizing, they just look at the surfaces. They seem to think that if they get the surfaces. the part's edges are somehow either automatic or irrelevant. Ideas In 3D has zeroed in on what others blithely disregarded. In reverse engineering (RE), that was edges. The movie industry digitizing requirements and the manufacturing industry requirements are totally different from one an other. One of the main differences is that in the manufacturing arena, you must have absolute control over the edges to be digitized and laser or scanned digitizing can never put points exactly on the edges.
In the movie industry, you are not concerned about how the character will be mass-produced in plastic or other moldable material. This main difference has led the majority of people to assume that digitizing for plastic injection molds is the same magic wand as for the movie industry. This is a total misunderstanding.
Also designing in a CAD system and replicating an actual object into a CAD system are completely different from one another. When you design in CAD, what you get is what you got. However when you reverse engineer or attempt to replicate an actual 3D object into a CAD system, you hardly ever get what you had.
To the person who does not do this often, it can be a real learning experience and an expensive one too.
This is the primary reason why most mold makers that have tried digitizing have had a bad taste in their mouths due to improperly digitized edges. We do not sell software. We make digitizing work for you solving your reverse engineering difficulties and CNC problems.
To construct a model in CAD from a point cloud of a few million points can be a mesmerizing impossibility to say the least. The points are never on the important edges of a model or mold. What determines whether laser scanners producing massive point clouds are suitable is the form and design of the object. Fast point clouds are definitely not for everything.
Many are the reasons that 3D Digitizing relative to CAD is so unknown. These are just a few.
We chose 3D Digitizing for a business for the last thirteen years and that's what we do best.
